The older streets bring machines with years on them, where the honest question is whether an upgrade is worth it or whether it's time to move the files somewhere new.

What actually goes wrong on a Mac
Swollen batteries, which are common and urgent
These are the Mac faults CompuTech repairs most in Calgary. The most frequent MacBook fault we see on machines past about four years is a swelling battery. The signs are unmistakable once you know them: the trackpad stops clicking evenly or sits proud of the case, the machine rocks slightly on a flat desk, or the lid no longer closes flush.
Stop using it, stop charging it, and don't press on the trackpad or try to prise anything. A swollen cell is a fire risk and it's also actively bending the machine around it. Caught early it's a battery. Left long enough it can damage the trackpad, the case and the display.
Butterfly keyboards, on a specific window of models
MacBook and MacBook Pro models from roughly 2015 to 2019 used the low-travel butterfly mechanism, which had a well documented tendency to fail from a single crumb. Keys repeat, stick or stop responding entirely. If you have one of these and one key has gone strange, that's what is happening.
Display cable wear on 2016 and 2017 MacBook Pro
On that generation of 13 inch MacBook Pro, the display cable is routed in a way that wears with opening and closing. The classic symptom is uneven backlighting along the bottom of the screen, often described as a stage light effect, and eventually a display that goes black past a certain opening angle. It's a known pattern rather than bad luck.
The one that catches people out: soldered storage
This is the most important thing on this page. On Macs with the T2 chip and on every Apple Silicon Mac, the storage is soldered to the logic board and tied to that specific machine. It can't be removed, moved to another Mac, or read on a normal recovery rig.
What that means in practice: if the logic board dies on one of those machines and there's no backup, the data may genuinely be gone, and no amount of money changes that. If you own a modern Mac and everything important lives only on it, set up a backup this week. We'll do it as part of any other job if you ask.
What's repairable, and what Apple designed out
Older Intel Macs are surprisingly serviceable. Many pre-2016 models take standard drives and socketed memory, and an old MacBook Pro or iMac with an SSD fitted becomes usable again for very little.
Newer machines are the opposite. Memory and storage are part of the chip package, displays are bonded assemblies, and batteries are adhered into the case. None of that makes them unrepairable, it just narrows what a repair can be, and it makes an accurate diagnosis matter more.

Macs stay worth fixing longer than people expect
CompuTech's straight answer on Mac repairs. More often than people assume. Macs hold their value and cost a lot to replace, so a battery, a keyboard or a display cable on a machine that's otherwise sound is usually money well spent.
The exceptions are a bonded display assembly on an older machine, and any logic board fault on a Mac that has already had a long life. Those are the two where the repair can approach the value of the machine, and where we'll lay it out and let you decide rather than assuming.
One genuine bargain: an older Intel iMac or MacBook Pro still running from a mechanical drive. Fitting an SSD to one of those is the biggest improvement per dollar available anywhere in this trade.

Almost certainly a swollen battery underneath it. Stop charging it, stop using it, don't press on the trackpad, and get it in. It's a safety matter as well as a repair.
Treat it as dangerous. Swollen lithium cells can vent or ignite, especially under pressure or heat. Don't puncture it, don't leave it charging unattended, and don't put it in household waste. We'll replace and dispose of it properly.
If your machine is from roughly 2015 to 2019 it very likely is. Those models used the butterfly mechanism, which fails from very little. It's a known pattern and it's repairable.
