What we support for businesses

The machines an office actually runs on

Staff laptops and desktops
Screens, batteries, drives, boards. Windows and Mac.
Workstations that won't start
Power, board or drive, diagnosed before anything is replaced.
Slow office machines
Usually a drive. Sometimes it isn't worth it, and we'll say so.
Failed drives and arrays
Server and NAS drives imaged before any rebuild.
Tills, scanners, wired setups
Supported in place, because that's where they have to work.
Batteries that won't hold
Tested first, so you only replace what's actually worn.
Who this is for

Support for the machines your staff use, not a repair counter

CompuTech's on-site IT support is for organisations in Calgary that need a machine working again today rather than a monthly arrangement. A workstation that won't boot on a Monday morning. The laptop your bookkeeper uses. A till PC that has started freezing at the worst possible moment. The machine the whole operation quietly depends on and nobody thought about until today.

Self-employed? You're a business to us. Sole traders, freelancers, contractors and consultants get the same on-site service as a twenty-seat office, and the same free assessment first.

There's nothing to sign. A one-off call-out is a normal job, quoted flat and finished. If a business later decides it wants the whole lot looked after on an ongoing basis, CompuTech's managed IT support covers that, and it's a separate conversation rather than a condition of getting a workstation fixed.

This page is for businesses. For anything outside that, CompuTech's main site covers it.

On-site

Fixed at your premises, where it has to work

A lot of business machines can't sensibly leave the building. A desktop wired into a till, a scanner and a receipt printer. A workstation on a shop floor. A server in a cupboard with a dozen cables into it. Unplugging that lot to drive it somewhere costs more time than the fix does.

So CompuTech comes to your premises across all four quadrants of Calgary, plus Airdrie, Chestermere, Cochrane and Okotoks as standard bookings, with the wider communities by arrangement. On-site visits run Monday to Saturday, and for anything hands-on expect same or next day.

What to have ready

  • The make and model off the base or the back of the machine, so the likely part can be checked before anyone sets off
  • Whether it's under manufacturer warranty, because that changes the honest answer about who should fix it
  • The sign-in details, if the fault only shows up once someone is logged in
  • Any error message photographed on a phone, since they rarely appear on demand
  • Rough idea of how urgent it is: a machine somebody is sitting idle next to gets prioritised differently from a spare

Give CompuTech the address, the number of machines and what's actually going wrong when you call, and you get a realistic window rather than a hopeful one.

The work

What actually breaks on business machines

Office computers fail differently from the ones people buy for themselves, mostly because they run harder, for longer, and get replaced later. After enough years of business computer repair, the patterns are hard to miss.

Machines that have simply slowed to a stop

The single most common business call. A workstation that was fine three years ago now takes four minutes to be usable, and a room full of staff waits four minutes every morning. Nearly always a mechanical hard drive that has had enough. Fitting an SSD is the cheapest change with the biggest effect anywhere in this trade, and on a business machine it pays for itself in a fortnight of not waiting.

Screens, hinges and batteries on staff laptops

Laptops that travel to sites and meetings take a beating. Cracked panels, hinges that have worn through the plastic they anchor into, batteries that no longer last a client visit. All three are fixes rather than replacements, and CompuTech matches replacement screens by the part number on the panel itself, because one model name can cover half a dozen different displays.

Machines that won't power on

Could be the power supply, the board, the drive or the button. All four are testable, and testing them is the difference between a part and a new machine. CompuTech diagnoses as components before quoting, which is why the answer is sometimes far cheaper than the business feared.

Heat, dust and the places computers get put

Business machines end up under desks, in cupboards, behind counters and next to heaters. Two or three years of that and the cooling is packed solid, the machine throttles, and it starts shutting down under load. A strip, clean and fresh thermal paste puts it back where it started for a fraction of a replacement.

Downtime

Getting it back, and what happens while it's out

For a business the cost of the fix is rarely the expensive part. The expensive part is somebody being unable to work. CompuTech's approach to that is to be accurate about timing rather than optimistic, so you can plan around a real answer.

Most on-site jobs finish in the visit. Cleanups, drive and memory upgrades, cooling service and common screens and batteries are usually same-day. What isn't same-day is anything waiting on a part that has to be ordered for your exact model, and board-level diagnosis, which is genuinely slow work. You'll be told which of the three your job is on the phone, before anyone has your machine.

Keeping the business moving meanwhile

  • If the machine still runs, CompuTech will say when it's safe to keep using it and when using it makes the fault worse
  • Where a drive is the problem, getting the business's data onto something usable comes before the fix itself
  • A machine going to the bench can often be set up so the person who used it can work from another one in the meantime
  • Where a business has a spare machine sitting in a cupboard, that gets pressed into service rather than left there

None of that is a service-level promise dressed up in a contract. It's what one technician who knows the business does, and it's why the assessment is a conversation rather than a form.

Brands and warranty

Every brand your staff actually use

Small businesses buy whatever suited the budget that quarter, so an office is usually a mix. CompuTech supports Windows and Mac machines from every mainstream maker: HP, Dell, Lenovo, ASUS, Acer, Apple, MSI and Microsoft Surface, business lines and everyday retail models alike, plus custom-built desktops and the odd machine nobody can identify.

Brands matter for business computer repair in ways that aren't obvious. Dell and Lenovo publish service manuals and part numbers, so ordering the right screen for a staff laptop is a lookup rather than a guess. A Surface is glued rather than screwed, so the same crack costs more to put right. Knowing which is in front of us is most of the job, and each brand has its own page with the detail.

Warranty gets routed, not ignored

A machine still inside its manufacturer warranty goes back to the maker when that's the better deal for the business, and CompuTech will tell you so rather than take the work. Out of warranty it changes, because manufacturer service tends to swap whole assemblies where a targeted fix on a staff laptop would do, and on an older machine that maths stops making sense.

Data

The drive with the business on it

The machine is replaceable. What's on it usually isn't. Bookkeeping, quotes, client records, years of files sitting on one drive because that's where they've always been. When that drive is the thing that failed, the fix stops being the priority.

Two things worth knowing before you call. If a drive has started clicking, power the machine off now: every extra minute of running costs recoverable files. And if a drive in a server or a NAS has failed, don't rebuild the array yet, because a rebuild puts every remaining drive under sustained load and that's exactly when a second marginal one goes. Imaging first is the safer order.

Business data recovery is assessed free and quoted fixed before any recovery, with no recovery meaning no fee. The full detail on how recovery actually works, logical against physical failure and what needs a cleanroom, is on the data recovery page.

The unglamorous version of all this: a backup that runs on its own, to a local device and to the cloud, turns the worst day into an afternoon. CompuTech will set one up alongside whatever else it's doing, which is the cheapest time to do it.

Mohammed provided excellent computer services—professional, efficient, and very knowledgeable. He quickly diagnosed the issue, explained the solution clearly, and delivered exactly what he promised. Highly recommended for anyone looking for reliable and competent IT support. The cookies and coffee he provided were great too.

Questions, answered

Yes. This page covers on-site IT support for businesses: staff workstations, office machines, servers and the laptops a business runs on. For anything else, start at CompuTech's main site.

No. A one-off call-out is a normal job, assessed free and quoted flat. Managed IT exists if a business wants everything looked after on an ongoing basis, but it is never a condition of getting a workstation fixed.

It does. Sole traders, freelancers, contractors and consultants are business clients here and get the same on-site service and the same free assessment as a larger office.

Whichever gets you working again faster. Anything wired into a counter, a network or a room gets fixed in place. Anything needing the machine apart, a screen, a board, a drive that needs imaging, comes to the shop and goes back to you. A visit that turns into a bench job isn't charged extra for the trip.

Same or next day across Calgary for anything hands-on, Monday to Saturday. Airdrie, Chestermere, Cochrane and Okotoks book the same way, and the wider communities are by arrangement. A machine can be dropped at the shop any day of the week.

Most on-site jobs finish in the visit. Drive and memory upgrades, cooling service and common screens and batteries are usually same-day. Ordered parts and board-level diagnosis are not, and you'll be told which your job is on the phone rather than after we have the machine.

There's a free assessment first, then one flat quote for the whole job before any work starts. No hourly meter. If the machine can't be fixed, there's no fee.

Yes. Tell CompuTech at the assessment and the paperwork is issued to the business rather than to whoever happened to be standing there.

HP, Dell, Lenovo, ASUS, Acer, Apple, MSI and Microsoft Surface, plus custom-built desktops. Windows and Mac, business lines and the everyday retail machines small businesses often end up with.

Those go back to the maker when that's the better deal, and CompuTech will say so instead of taking the work. Out of warranty, the machine gets a flat quote and a straight answer about whether it's worth fixing at all.

Usually yes, and it's the most common business job there is. A machine still running from a mechanical hard drive becomes a different computer with an SSD, for a fraction of a replacement. If the machine is too old for that to help, you'll be told rather than sold the upgrade.

Talk to CompuTech before rebuilding the array. A rebuild puts every remaining drive under sustained load, which is when a second marginal one tends to fail, and that turns a recoverable situation into a much harder one. Imaging first is safer, and the assessment is free.

Yes. Anything carrying risk gets backed up before work starts, moving data across is part of a drive replacement rather than an extra, and nothing is kept on CompuTech's equipment after the job.

Yes, and it's usually the efficient way to do it. Say how many when you book so the window is realistic, and each machine gets its own assessment and its own line on the quote.

Mo, the owner. CompuTech is one technician, so the person who assessed the machine is the person who fixes it and the person who answers when you call back.
