Plug in an external monitor
Connect a TV or a monitor with an HDMI or USB-C cable. If the picture appears on the external display, the computer and the graphics are fine and the problem is in the screen, the cable or the backlight. If the external display is also black, the fault is further in and a new panel wouldn't have helped at all.
Shine a torch at the screen
Turn the laptop on, hold a phone torch close to the display at an angle, and look carefully. If you can make out a faint desktop or a cursor, the panel is alive and the backlight has failed. That's a different repair from a dead panel and worth knowing before anyone quotes you.
Move the lid slowly
If the image flickers, cuts out at a certain angle, or comes back when you press near the hinge, that points at the display cable, not the panel. Cables are cheaper than screens. It's also a common outcome of a failing hinge, which is why we check the hinge whenever we see it.

Why the exact panel matters more than the model name

Manufacturers ship the same machine with different resolutions, different brightness, different refresh rates, touch and non-touch versions, matte and glossy finishes, and connectors with different pin counts. They aren't interchangeable.
So we match on the part number printed on the back of your existing panel, not on what the laptop is called. It's the difference between getting your screen back and getting a screen back that's dimmer, slower or missing touch.
Panels and assemblies aren't the same job
On most conventional non-touch laptops, the panel is a separate part that comes out on its own. That's the straightforward version of this repair.
On modern Macs, most touchscreens, convertibles and Surface devices, the glass, touch layer and panel are bonded into one assembly and often glued into the lid. There's no glass-only repair on those, because there's no separate glass. It's a bigger part and more careful work, and you should know which of the two you have before you agree to anything.

Using it while you wait
If the machine still works on an external monitor, you can keep using it while a part is on its way. If the glass is cracked and shedding, stop, because loose glass gets into the keyboard and the hinge, and pressing on a damaged panel can spread the damage further into it.
When a screen replacement isn't the right call
CompuTech will say when a screen replacement isn't the right call. Most of the time it is. A screen on a machine that's otherwise fine is a good repair, and it costs a fraction of a replacement laptop.
The exceptions are worth naming. A bonded assembly on a cheap laptop or an older Chromebook can cost close to what the machine is worth. A cracked screen on a machine that also needs a battery, a hinge and a drive is three repairs pretending to be one. And a screen replacement on a laptop with a failing board is money spent on the wrong problem.
In all three cases you'll get the number and the reasoning, and if we think you should not do it we'll say so. We would rather tell you a repair isn't worth it than sell you one that's not.
