Common MSI faults

What we see most on MSI hardware

THERMAL
Shuts down mid-game
Heat protection. Usually a service, not a dead GPU.
THROTTLE
Frame rates drop after 10 minutes
Throttling from dried paste and packed fins.
FANS
Grinding or ticking fan
Worn bearing. A clean won't fix that.
BOARD
Desktop won't post
Board, memory or power, diagnosed as components.
GPU
Graphics card fans dead
Fan and thermal pad service before replacement.
SCREEN
Screen cracked on a gaming laptop
Matched on refresh rate, not just model name.

Getting loud but still working? That's the cheap moment to service it.

How it works here

The honest version of our coverage

The honest version of CompuTech's High River coverage. High River is one of the wider communities Mo travels to, not one of the four towns on the standard in-home run. That means an on-site visit is arranged rather than slotted into a normal window, and we would rather say that plainly than let you find out after booking.

In practice most High River jobs are drop-offs, and that usually suits people better anyway. Leave the machine at 303 Wentworth Row SW when you're next up the highway, we diagnose it free, and you get a call with the fault and one flat price before anything happens. The shop is open seven days.

When we do come out

Wi-Fi and network problems, a desktop wired into a bigger setup, or a small business with several machines and a shared drive. Those need to be seen where they live, so call and we'll arrange it. One laptop with one fault doesn't, and we'll tell you so rather than charge you for a trip that doesn't help.

The pattern

Heat, and everything downstream of it

Heat, and the sequence it follows

On MSI hardware CompuTech sees one problem and everything downstream of it. Gaming laptops fail in a predictable order and MSI is no exception. Year one it's quiet and fast. Year two the fans are noticeably louder. Year three frame rates drop after ten minutes of play. Year four it starts shutting down mid-game with no warning.

That whole sequence is one problem: the cooling stopped working properly. Dust packs the fins solid, the thermal paste dries and stops transferring heat, and the thermal pads on the memory and power circuitry harden. The machine protects itself by throttling, then by cutting power.

People bring these in expecting to hear the graphics chip has died. Usually it hasn't. A full strip, clean, repaste and fresh pads returns most of them to close to how they started, and it costs a fraction of a replacement.

Fans that have done their miles

Separate from dust, the fan bearings themselves wear. That's the grinding or ticking noise that changes pitch with load. A clean won't fix a worn bearing, and we'll tell you which of the two you have rather than doing the cheap job and hoping.

Thin chassis, ordinary hinge wear

The thinner Stealth and Modern models carry the same hinge risks as any slim laptop. Worth catching early for the same reason as always: the display cable runs past the hinge.

Desktops, boards and cards

MSI is a major motherboard and graphics card maker, so a lot of MSI work here's not a laptop at all. Machines that won't start, boards that don't post, cards with failed fans or degraded thermal pads, and memory that a board won't accept. Those get diagnosed as components rather than as a machine.

Serviceability

What's fixable on MSI hardware

Gaming laptops are, thankfully, built to be opened. Access to the cooling is straightforward on most MSI models, storage and memory are usually socketed, and there's often room for a second drive.

PartOn this brand
CoolingFully serviceable, and the fix for the large majority of MSI complaints
FansReplaceable when the bearing itself has worn rather than just clogged
MemorySocketed on most gaming models, frequently two slots
StorageStandard M.2, often with a spare slot for adding rather than replacing
ScreensBare panel on most gaming models, matched by part number and refresh rate
Graphics cards in desktopsFan and thermal pad service, plus proper fault diagnosis
What CompuTech can and can't change on a MSI, by part.

One thing worth knowing on a gaming laptop screen: these machines ship with different refresh rates on the same model name. A replacement panel has to match, or you lose the fast display you paid for. We match on part number, not on model.

Straight answer

Almost always yes, with one exception

CompuTech's straight answer on MSI repairs. Nearly always, if the fault is thermal. A gaming laptop service is the highest value repair in this trade, because the alternative people are weighing it against is a new gaming laptop.

Where it gets marginal is board-level failure on an older gaming machine, particularly one that has been running hot for years. We diagnose before quoting, and if it's not worth it we'll say so.

If your MSI is still keeping up but sounds like it's trying to take off, service it now. Cooling maintenance done before the shutdowns start is cheaper and it protects the components that are expensive to replace.

How our pricing works

You get a clear, flat-rate quote before any work begins. If we can't fix it, you don't pay the repair fee. Simple as that.

Every job is different, so we look first and quote you directly. No surprises, and nothing happens until you've said go.

Top tier service all the way! I had a laptop display issue that was beyond repair. Rather than recommend a costly display unit replacement, Mohammed gave me a very cost-effective swap option.

Davis Winters · Google review

Within 40 minutes of my first phone call, Mohammed had my laptop in his hands and was already taking it apart while explaining the issue and repair process to me in detail. He diagnosed the problem quickly and efficiently, and his expertise was obvious throughout the entire experience.

Harold Bateman · Google review

Mohammed provided excellent computer services—professional, efficient, and very knowledgeable. He quickly diagnosed the issue, explained the solution clearly, and delivered exactly what he promised. Highly recommended for anyone looking for reliable and competent IT support. The cookies and coffee he provided were great too.

Questions, answered

Yes, as one of the wider communities Mo travels to. Visits are arranged rather than booked into a standard window, and most jobs from here come to the shop instead.

Drop it at 303 Wentworth Row SW next time you're in Calgary. Free diagnosis, a call with the fault and a flat price, and it's ready for your next trip in.

Network and Wi-Fi work, a desktop that's part of a wired setup, or a small business with several machines. Those genuinely need to be seen in place.

It depends on the fault and whether a part has to come in. You get a realistic timeline with the quote, before you agree to anything.

Yes, and it stays free if you decide not to go ahead.

Gaming laptops including Katana, Stealth, Raider, Vector, Cyborg and Titan, the Modern and Prestige lines, plus MSI motherboards and graphics cards in desktops.

Usually not. It's nearly always heat protection. Dust packs the cooling fins, the paste dries out, and the machine cuts power rather than cook itself. A full service fixes most of them.

Stripping it down, clearing the cooling fins and fans properly, replacing the thermal paste on the processor and graphics chip, and replacing the thermal pads on memory and power circuitry where the design uses them. Then testing under load with temperatures monitored.

Roughly every couple of years, sooner in a dusty room or a house with pets. If yours has never been done and it's three years old, that's almost certainly your problem.

If it grinds or ticks and changes pitch with speed, that's usually a worn bearing rather than dust, and a clean won't cure it. The fan gets replaced. We'll tell you which you have rather than doing the cheap job and hoping.

Yes, and the refresh rate matters. These machines ship with different panels under the same model name, so we match by part number to keep the fast display you paid for.

On most MSI gaming laptops, yes. Two memory slots and a spare drive slot are common, which makes them good machines to keep rather than replace.

Yes. Board, memory, power supply and graphics card get tested as separate components so you aren't replacing a whole machine over one part.

Often not. Card fans are a serviceable part, and degraded thermal pads are a common companion fault. We check before recommending a replacement card.

If it has been throttling, noticeably. You aren't gaining performance so much as getting back what heat has been taking away.

A full thermal service is usually a same-day bench job. Parts that need ordering get a realistic timeline with the quote.

Thermal work is a bench job, so it comes to the shop at 303 Wentworth Row SW, open seven days. Desktop diagnosis can often start with an in-home visit across Calgary and the nearby towns.

Yes. A cooling service doesn't touch storage at all, and anything that does gets backed up first.

One flat quote after a free look, before any work starts. If we can't fix it, no repair fee.

If the fault is thermal, almost always, because the comparison is a new gaming laptop. Board-level failure on a machine that has run hot for years is the case where we might tell you to stop.
