HP repair in High River

CompuTech repairs HP laptops and desktops for High River, most often at the Calgary bench. An HP with a creaking hinge is worth bringing up before the display cable goes, because that turns a plastic repair into a screen repair.

How it works here

The honest version of our coverage

The honest version of CompuTech's High River coverage. High River is one of the wider communities Mo travels to, not one of the four towns on the standard in-home run. That means an on-site visit is arranged rather than slotted into a normal window, and we would rather say that plainly than let you find out after booking.

In practice most High River jobs are drop-offs, and that usually suits people better anyway. Leave the machine at 303 Wentworth Row SW when you're next up the highway, we diagnose it free, and you get a call with the fault and one flat price before anything happens. The shop is open seven days.

When we do come out

Wi-Fi and network problems, a desktop wired into a bigger setup, or a small business with several machines and a shared drive. Those need to be seen where they live, so call and we'll arrange it. One laptop with one fault doesn't, and we'll tell you so rather than charge you for a trip that doesn't help.

The pattern

What actually goes wrong on an HP

Hinges, and the damage they cause on the way out

These are the HP faults CompuTech sees in Calgary week after week. This is the signature HP fault and it's worth catching early. On consumer Pavilion and Envy laptops the hinge is anchored into the plastic of the lid and base rather than into metal. Over a few years of opening and closing, the anchor points give way. First you get a creak, then a small crack near the corner of the screen, then the bezel starts lifting away from the lid every time you open it.

Left alone it stops being a hinge problem. The lifting bezel puts tension on the display cable that runs through the hinge, and once that cable is damaged you've gone from a plastic repair to a screen or cable replacement. If your HP has started creaking, that's the moment to have it looked at, not after the display starts flickering.

Heat, and the slow death it causes

Thin Envy and Pavilion chassis pull air through a small intake, and after two or three years that intake is a mat of dust and hair. The fan runs constantly, the machine gets hot near the hinge, and performance drops off a cliff because the processor is protecting itself. People describe this as the laptop getting slow, and they're right, but no amount of software cleanup fixes it.

A strip down, a proper clean and fresh thermal paste puts it back where it started. It's one of the most satisfying jobs we do, and it's cheap compared with the replacement people were about to buy.

Boot failures that look worse than they are

A large share of the HPs that arrive here dead aren't dead. A no bootable device message often traces to a storage setting in the BIOS, not a failed drive, and machines that shipped in the last few years have their own quirks around fast startup that can leave them apparently unresponsive. We check the cheap causes before quoting the expensive ones, which is the whole point of a free diagnosis.

Serviceability

What can be fixed, and what HP soldered down

HP's range splits sharply. Business lines like EliteBook and ProBook are built to be opened: memory in sockets, drives on standard connectors, service access panels, keyboards that come out as an assembly. Those machines age well and are worth investing in.

Thin consumer lines are the opposite. Most Spectre models and many recent thin Envy models have memory soldered directly to the board, so the only upgrade left is storage. That's not a fault, it's a design decision, but it matters when you're deciding whether to spend money on a machine that feels slow. We'll tell you which of the two you have before you commit to anything.

PartOn this brand
ScreensReplaced as a panel on most models, matched by part number to your exact display, not a near-enough substitute
Hinges and lid plasticsRepairable if caught before the display cable is damaged
BatteriesInternal on nearly everything current, straightforward to replace
StorageUpgradeable across almost the whole range, and the single best change on an older HP
MemorySocketed on business lines, soldered on most thin consumer models
Charging portsRepairable, including the older barrel-style jacks that wear out

Straight answer

Which HPs are worth the money

CompuTech's straight answer on which HPs are worth the money. An EliteBook or ProBook with a good screen and a working keyboard is nearly always worth fixing. They were built for fleets, parts are around, and a drive plus a clean gets years more out of them.

A five-year-old budget Pavilion with a cracked hinge, a tired battery and a failing drive is a different conversation, and we'll have it straight. Three repairs on one machine can add up past what the machine is worth, and we would rather tell you that than take the money for the first one and let you discover the rest later.

If you also have an HP printer that has stopped talking to the house, that's a separate job we do all the time, and it's usually a network setting rather than a broken printer.

Mo at Computech found a great solution to repair my laptop in a very short timeline. He is honest, knowledgeable and won't try to upsell you on unnecessary gadgets. I will use him again if/when I have other problems with my aging laptop.

While many big chain computer repair shops charge absurd prices to run simple diagnostic tests and leave you without your computer for several days, Computech's services are affordably priced and the turnaround time is outstanding. Mohammed takes great pride in his work and in building relationships with his customers- this is uncommon to see in most businesses today.

Mohammed provided fast, and professional service. The price was very reasonable. Would recommend to anyone with any type of computer issues.

Questions, answered

Yes, as one of the wider communities Mo travels to. Visits are arranged rather than booked into a standard window, and most jobs from here come to the shop instead.

Drop it at 303 Wentworth Row SW next time you're in Calgary. Free diagnosis, a call with the fault and a flat price, and it's ready for your next trip in.

Network and Wi-Fi work, a desktop that's part of a wired setup, or a small business with several machines. Those genuinely need to be seen in place.

It depends on the fault and whether a part has to come in. You get a realistic timeline with the quote, before you agree to anything.

Yes, and it stays free if you decide not to go ahead.

Pavilion, Envy, Spectre, EliteBook, ProBook, Omen and Victus laptops, plus HP desktops and all-in-ones. Give us the model number off the base and we'll tell you exactly what is possible.

Usually yes, and the sooner the better. Once the lid starts lifting it puts strain on the display cable running through the hinge, and a plastic repair turns into a screen repair.

Usually it's just full. Thin HP chassis clog their intake with dust over a couple of years, so the fan runs flat out and the processor slows itself down to survive. A strip, clean and repaste puts it back to normal.

Often not. That message frequently comes from a storage mode setting in the BIOS, not a failed drive. We check the free causes before quoting the expensive ones.

Yes. We match the replacement panel by part number to your exact display, because HP uses several different panels across one model name and a near-enough match gets you wrong resolution or a dead touch layer.

Depends which one. EliteBook and ProBook business models generally have sockets. Most Spectre models and many thin Envy models have memory soldered to the board, so storage is the only upgrade left. We'll confirm which yours is before you buy anything.

It's the single biggest improvement you can make to an older HP, and it usually costs less than people expect. If the rest of the machine is sound we'll say so, and if it's not we'll say that too.

Test it first. Sometimes it's a genuinely worn battery, sometimes it's a power setting or a background process draining it. We check before selling you a part.

Most are done same-day. Anything needing a part we don't carry depends on availability for your exact model, and you'll get a real timeline with the quote rather than a hopeful one.

Either. In-home visits cover Calgary and the nearby towns, or drop it at the shop at 303 Wentworth Row SW, open seven days.

Yes. We back up before anything with risk attached, and a drive upgrade includes moving your data across rather than charging for it separately.

You get a flat quote after a free look, before any work starts. If we can't fix it, you don't pay the repair fee.

Different job, and yes we do it. Nine times out of ten it's the printer losing its place on your network, not a hardware failure. We give it a permanent address so it stops happening.

Sometimes the honest answer is no, and you'll get that answer. A business EliteBook is usually worth it. A five-year-old budget Pavilion needing three separate repairs often isn't, and we would rather tell you than take the money.

Yes. Power supplies, drives, memory, fans and the all-in-one models where the whole machine lives behind the screen.
