What we see most on Acer machines
We'll tell you when a repair costs more than the machine is worth. That happens here.
South on the 2A, at your door
CompuTech covers the whole of Okotoks for in-home visits. Okotoks is one of the four towns on the in-home list, so a visit here's booked exactly like a Calgary one, plus a travel fee Mo confirms when you book. We come to the house, find out what's actually wrong, and if it needs a part you get one price, visit included, before anything is taken apart.
We cover the whole town. Drake Landing, Cimarron, Crystal Shores, Air Ranch, Westmount, Suntree, Wedderburn, D'Arcy Ranch and the older streets down by the Sheep River. If you're on an acreage between Okotoks and the highway, that's fine too, just give us the address when you book.
Old town, new town
Okotoks has a genuine split and it shows up in the work. The newer subdivisions bring big houses with Wi-Fi that gives up somewhere around the bonus room, plus a lot of smart doorbells, cameras and TVs that all want to be on the same network and don't always agree about it. The older streets bring machines with years on them, where the honest question is whether an upgrade is worth it or whether it's time to move the files somewhere new.
Either way the shop at 303 Wentworth Row SW is open seven days if dropping it off is easier than waiting in.
Where Acers give up, and how soon
Aspire hinges and the plastics around them
Where Acers give up, from what CompuTech sees in Calgary. The Aspire range is built to a price, and the first place that shows is the hinge mount. It anchors into plastic, the plastic fatigues, and one day the corner of the lid starts lifting away from the base when you open it. From there the display cable is at risk and the repair gets more expensive.
If your Aspire has started making a cracking noise when it opens, or the bezel no longer sits flush, get it seen while it's still a hinge repair.
Nitro and Predator: heat, dust and shutdowns
Acer's gaming lines suffer the same way every gaming laptop does. Two or three years of dust in the fins, paste past its best, and a machine that throttles hard and then starts cutting out under load. It presents like a dying graphics chip and it usually isn't.
Chromebooks, and being honest about them
Acer is one of the biggest Chromebook makers, and a lot of them belong to students. They get dropped, sat on, and closed on pencils. Cracked screens, broken hinges and damaged keyboards are the standard three.
All three are repairable. Whether they're worth repairing is a real question, because a Chromebook can be inexpensive enough that a screen replacement approaches the cost of another one. We'll do the maths with you rather than quietly quoting the repair.
Storage that can't be upgraded
The cheapest Aspire, Swift and Chromebook models often use onboard eMMC storage soldered to the board instead of a proper drive. It's slow, and it stays slow, because there's nothing to replace. If yours is one of those and it has become painful to use, an upgrade won't rescue it and we'll say so instead of taking the money.
Where Acer builds to a price, and where it doesn't
Mid and upper Acer models are conventional and repair well. Screens come as bare panels on most non-touch machines, storage is standard M.2, and there's usually a memory socket. The cooling on the gaming range is designed to be opened, which is what it needs.
| Part | On this brand |
|---|---|
| Screens | Bare panel on most Aspire and Nitro models, bonded assembly on Spin and touch models |
| Storage | Upgradeable across mid and upper models, soldered eMMC on the cheapest ones |
| Memory | Usually one socket on mid-range, soldered on thin Swift and budget models |
| Cooling | Fully serviceable on Nitro and Predator, and the fix for most gaming complaints |
| Batteries | Internal and replaceable, tested before we recommend one |
| Hinges | Repairable when caught before the cable is damaged |
Where an Acer stops being worth the money
CompuTech's straight answer on where an Acer stops being worth the money. A Nitro or Predator that has started shutting down is nearly always worth servicing. Cleaning and repasting a gaming laptop is the best value repair in this entire trade.
A mid-range Aspire with a good screen and a failing drive is worth an SSD, and the difference is dramatic. A budget Aspire on eMMC that has become unusable isn't, and we would rather tell you that on the phone than after you've paid for a diagnosis somewhere else.
Chromebooks: fix a hinge, think hard about a screen, and ask us for the numbers before deciding. We have talked plenty of people out of repairs on these and we'll do it again.
No surprises. Ever.
You know what a visit costs before you book, and you agree the price of any repair before work begins. If we can't fix it, you don't pay. Simple as that.
Visits are 1 hour minimum, then billed by the half hour. If Mo can't fix it, you don't pay, and nothing gets opened or ordered until you've said go.

Three steps to a working Acer
“Great experience for us! We needed an old laptop repaired and we received a quick estimate and reasonable price! We are very satisfied.”
“I want to highly recommend Mohammed. Once I contacted due to laptop issues he was pretty much on my doorstep to get my laptop back in action. There were quite a few issues with the laptop but he stayed to the bitter end to get it fully functional.”
“While many big chain computer repair shops charge absurd prices to run simple diagnostic tests and leave you without your computer for several days, Computech's services are affordably priced and the turnaround time is outstanding. Mohammed takes great pride in his work and in building relationships with his customers- this is uncommon to see in most businesses today.”
Questions, answered
We come to you. Okotoks is on the in-home list, so it books like any Calgary visit. Drop-off at the SW Calgary shop is there if you prefer it.
Yes. Okotoks is outside the city, so a travel fee applies, and Mo tells you the amount when you book rather than adding it afterwards.
Frequently the same day when you call in the morning. Before noon is the best window to catch a same-day slot.
The whole town and the acreages around it: Drake Landing, Cimarron, Crystal Shores, Air Ranch, Westmount, Suntree, Wedderburn, D'Arcy Ranch and the older streets near the Sheep River.
Monday to Saturday. Sunday the Calgary shop takes appointments but there are no road visits.
Aspire, Swift, Nitro, Predator, Spin, TravelMate, Chromebook and Acer desktops. The model number on the base tells us what is upgradeable.
Yes, and worth doing sooner. Once the lid lifts it starts pulling on the display cable, which turns a hinge repair into a screen repair.
Usually not. It's nearly always heat protection kicking in because the fins are packed with dust and the paste has dried out. A clean and repaste fixes most of them.
Sometimes, sometimes not, and you deserve the maths, not a quote. Chromebooks are cheap enough that a screen can approach the cost of replacing the whole thing. We'll tell you which side yours falls on.
If it has a normal drive, yes, and dramatically. If it has soldered eMMC storage, which the cheapest models do, then no, and no upgrade will change that. We check first and give you the real answer.
Give us the model number and we'll tell you in a minute. It's usually the models with 64 or 128 gigabytes of storage at the budget end.
Mid-range models usually have a socket. Thin Swift models and budget machines are often soldered. We confirm against your model before you buy anything.
Yes. Most non-touch Aspire and Nitro models take a bare panel matched by part number. Spin and touch models are a bonded assembly, which is a different part.
Power supply, charging circuit, battery or board. You find out which before deciding whether to go ahead, and on a budget Acer we'll say if it isn't worth it.
Most are same-day. Cleaning and repasting a gaming machine is typically a same-day bench job. Ordered parts get a real timeline with the quote.
Yes, in-home across Calgary and the nearby towns, or drop it at 303 Wentworth Row SW, open seven days.
Yes. We back up before anything risky and moving data across is part of a drive upgrade.
One price, visit included, for any parts job, given before work starts. If it can't be fixed, you don't pay.
Depends where it sat in the range. A decent mid-range one with a good screen usually yes. A budget one needing several repairs at once usually not, and we'll say so.
Yes. Drives, memory, power supplies, cooling and machines that won't start.
