How it works here

South on the 2A, at your door

CompuTech covers the whole of Okotoks for in-home visits. Okotoks is one of the four towns on the in-home list, so a visit here's booked exactly like a Calgary one. We come to the house, look at the machine for free, and give you a flat price before anything is taken apart.

We cover the whole town. Drake Landing, Cimarron, Crystal Shores, Air Ranch, Westmount, Suntree, Wedderburn, D'Arcy Ranch and the older streets down by the Sheep River. If you're on an acreage between Okotoks and the highway, that's fine too, just give us the address when you book.

Old town, new town

Okotoks has a genuine split and it shows up in the work. The newer subdivisions bring big houses with Wi-Fi that gives up somewhere around the bonus room, plus a lot of smart doorbells, cameras and TVs that all want to be on the same network and don't always agree about it. The older streets bring machines with years on them, where the honest question is whether an upgrade is worth it or whether it's time to move the files somewhere new.

Either way the shop at 303 Wentworth Row SW is open seven days if dropping it off is easier than waiting in.

The two big ones

Two Lenovos wearing one badge

ThinkPad: built to be opened, and it shows

CompuTech sees two very different Lenovos under one badge in Calgary. ThinkPads are the most serviceable mainstream laptops there are. Lenovo publishes hardware maintenance manuals and individual part numbers for them, keyboards come out as replaceable units, memory is usually socketed, and the machines are designed on the assumption that someone will one day take them apart.

The practical effect is that a seven-year-old ThinkPad with a good screen is usually worth repairing, where the equivalent budget machine from another brand wouldn't be. Spilled a drink on the keyboard? On a lot of ThinkPads that's a keyboard, not a machine.

What does fail: hinges eventually, the display cable that runs through them, and the bottom cover screws which are captive and get chewed by previous repairs done in a hurry.

Yoga: hinges that do twice the work

Convertibles fold all the way back, which means the hinge and the display cable get used far more than on a normal laptop. Yoga faults cluster there: stiff or loose hinges, a screen that flickers at certain angles, and touch input that stops working after the digitizer cable has been flexed a few thousand times too many.

Because the display, glass, touch layer and cable are bonded together on many Yoga models, a cracked screen usually means a full assembly, not a bare panel. We'll tell you which yours takes before quoting.

IdeaPad: check before you plan an upgrade

IdeaPad spans a huge price range. Higher models are conventional and upgradeable. The cheapest ones often have memory soldered to the board and storage as slow onboard eMMC rather than a proper drive, and that combination can't be made fast. If you have one and it feels sluggish, we'll tell you there's no upgrade that fixes it, rather than selling you one that won't.

What opens up

Where Lenovo makes repair easy

Like Dell, Lenovo publishes what each machine contains, which takes most of the guesswork out of ordering. The serial number on the base is the key. It tells us the exact display, the exact battery and whether your machine has sockets or solder.

PartOn this brand
KeyboardsReplaceable as a unit on most ThinkPads, which makes spills far less serious
MemorySocketed across most of ThinkPad and mid-range IdeaPad, soldered on thin and budget models
StorageStandard M.2 on the great majority, and the best upgrade on any older Lenovo
ScreensBare panel on most ThinkPads, full bonded assembly on most Yoga and touch models
BatteriesInternal on current models, straightforward to replace
HingesRepairable, and worth doing before the display cable is damaged
What CompuTech can and can't change on a Lenovo, by part.

Legion and LOQ gaming machines get the same treatment as any gaming laptop: they live and die by cooling, and a clean and repaste is usually the fix for a machine that has started shutting down under load.

No sales pitch

The easiest yes in this whole trade

CompuTech's straight answer on Lenovo repairs. ThinkPads are the easiest yes in this whole article. If the screen and keyboard are sound, almost any other fault is worth repairing, and the machine will keep going for years afterwards.

Yoga models are worth it when the fault isn't the screen assembly, and worth a conversation when it is, because a bonded assembly is the single most expensive part on the machine.

Budget IdeaPad models with soldered memory and eMMC storage are the ones where we're most likely to tell you to spend the money elsewhere. Not because we can't fix them, but because fixing them doesn't get you a machine you'll enjoy using.

Mo at Computech found a great solution to repair my laptop in a very short timeline. He is honest, knowledgeable and won't try to upsell you on unnecessary gadgets. I will use him again if/when I have other problems with my aging laptop.

Questions, answered

We come to you. Okotoks is on the in-home list, so it books like any Calgary visit. Drop-off at the SW Calgary shop is there if you prefer it.

No. The quote you approve covers the job, and nothing gets added for the drive.

Frequently the same day when you call in the morning. Before noon is the best window to catch a same-day slot.

The whole town and the acreages around it: Drake Landing, Cimarron, Crystal Shores, Air Ranch, Westmount, Suntree, Wedderburn, D'Arcy Ranch and the older streets near the Sheep River.

Monday to Saturday. Sunday the Calgary shop is open for drop-offs but there are no road visits.

ThinkPad, ThinkBook, IdeaPad, Yoga, Legion, LOQ and ThinkCentre desktops. The serial number on the base tells us the exact configuration.

Genuinely easier. Lenovo publishes maintenance manuals and part numbers for them, memory is usually socketed, and keyboards are designed as replaceable units. It means older ThinkPads stay worth repairing longer than most brands.

Often not. On many ThinkPads the keyboard is a replaceable unit and the board underneath is protected better than most. Unplug it, hold the power button until it's off, turn it upside down to drain, and don't try switching it on to test it. Then call.

Usually the display cable, worn by the folding the hinge design invites. It's repairable and it's better done before the flicker becomes a permanent dead display.

Not necessarily. Touch runs on its own layer and its own cable, so touch can fail while the display is perfect. We diagnose which before quoting, because the two repairs are very different.

Yes. On most Yoga and touch models the glass, panel and digitizer are bonded into one assembly, so it's replaced as a unit rather than as a bare panel. We confirm which yours takes before giving you a price.

Depends on the model. Mid and upper IdeaPads usually have a socket. The cheapest ones have it soldered. We check against your serial instead of guessing.

If it has onboard eMMC storage, not a real drive, and soldered memory, there's genuinely no upgrade that will make it quick. We would rather tell you that than take money for one that won't work.

Usually not. It's nearly always heat: clogged fins, dried paste, and a machine protecting itself by cutting power. A proper clean and repaste fixes most of them.

Most are same-day. Ordered parts depend on availability for your exact model and you'll get a real timeline with the quote.

Either. In-home across Calgary and the nearby towns, or drop it at 303 Wentworth Row SW, open seven days.

Yes. We back up before anything with risk, and a drive upgrade includes moving everything across.

One flat quote after a free look, before any work. No repair fee if we can't fix it.

If the screen and keyboard are good, usually yes, and by a bigger margin than most brands. A battery and an SSD often buy several more years.

Yes. Drives, memory, power supplies, fans and the small form factor models that need care to get into.
